સુન્દરકાણ્ડ્.
અથ પંચમ સ્સર્ગઃ

તતસ્સ મધ્યંગત મંશુમન્તમ્ જ્યોત્સ્નાવિતાનં મહદુદ્વમન્તમ્|
દદર્શ ધીમાન્દિવિ ભાનુમન્તમ્ ગોષ્ઠે વૃષં મત્તમિવ ભ્રમન્તમ્||1||

સ|| તતઃ સઃ ધીમાન્ મધ્યં ગતં અંશુમન્તં ઉદ્યમંતં મહત્ જ્યોત્સ્નાવિતાનમ્ દિવિ ભાનુમંતં ગોષ્ઠે ભ્રમન્તં વૃષમિવ દદર્શ||

Then that intelligent Hanuman saw the luminous lord, the Moon, rise to the middle of the sky spreading a canopy of light like the Sun in the sky. He was looking like an intoxicated mighty bull in the cowshed (amidst a herd of cows)

લોકસ્ય પાપાનિ વિનાશયન્તમ્ મહોદધિં ચાપિ સમેધયન્તમ્|
ભૂતાનિ સર્વાણિ વિરાજયન્તમ્ દદર્શ શીતાંશુમથાભિયાન્તમ્||2||

સ|| અથ અભિયાન્તં લોકસ્ય પાપાનિ વિનાશયન્તં મહોદદ્ધિં સમેધયન્તં ચાપિ સર્વાણિ ભૂતાનિ વિરાજયન્તં શીતાંશું દદર્શ||

Then the Hanuman moving forward saw the Moon spreading his light as if to ward off the worlds agony, augmenting the ocean to swell, and illuminating all the creatures.

યા ભાતિ લક્શ્મી ર્ભુવિમન્દરસ્થા તદા પ્રદોષેશુ ચ સાગરસ્થા|
તથૈવ તોયેષુ ચપુષ્કરસ્થા રરાજ સા ચારુનિશાકરસ્થા ||3||

સ|| ભુવિ યા મન્દરસ્થા લક્ષ્મીઃ ભાતિ તથા પ્રદોષેષુ સાગરસ્થા તથા તોયેષુ પુષ્કરસ્થા સા ચારુનિશાકરતસ્થા દદર્શ||

The splendor of the Moon was seen like the splendor found on the Mandara mountain , like the splendor found on the ocean at dusk, like the splendor found in the water on the lotus leaves in the lakes.

હંસોયથા રાજત પઞ્જરસ્થઃ સિંહો યથા મંદરકંદરસ્થઃ|
વીરો યથા ગર્વિત કુઞ્જરસ્થઃ ચંદ્રોઽપિ બભ્રાજ તથાંબરસ્થઃ||4||

સ||યથા રાજત પઞ્જરસ્થઃ હંસઃ યથા મંદરકન્દરસ્થઃ સિંહઃ યથા ગર્વિત કુઞ્જરસ્થઃ વીરઃ તથા અંબરસ્થઃ ચંદ્રઃ અપિ ભભ્રાજ ||

The Moon shone like the swan in the silver cage, like the Lion in the cave on the mountain Mandara, like the proud hero sitting on an elephant.

સ્થિતઃ કકુદ્માનિવ તીક્ષ્ણ શૃઙ્ગો મહાચલશ્વેત ઇવોચ્છશૃઙ્ગઃ|
હસ્તીવ જાંબૂનદ બદ્ધશૃઙ્ગો રરાજ ચંદ્રઃ પરિપૂર્ણશૃઙ્ગઃ||5||

સ|| પરિપૂર્ણ શૃઙ્ગઃ ચંદ્રઃ તીક્ષ્ણ શૃઙ્ગઃ સ્થિતઃ કકુદ્માનિવ, શ્વેતઃ ઉચ્ચશૃઙ્ગઃ મહાચલઃ (ઇવ) જામ્બૂનદ બદ્ધ શૃઙ્ગઃ હસ્તિ ઇવ રરાજ||

The full moon with its horn like spot was looking like a bull with sharp horns, like the Himalayas with its tall peaks, like an elephant with its gold plated tusks.

વિનષ્ટ શીતાંબુતુષાર પઙ્કો મહાગ્રહગ્રાહ વિનષ્ઠ પઙ્કઃ|
પ્રકાશ લક્ષ્મ્યાશ્રયનિર્મલાઙ્કો રરાજ ચન્દ્રો ભગવાન્ શશાઙ્કઃ ||6||

 

સ||વિનષ્ટ શીતાંબુ તુષાર પઙ્કઃ મહાગ્રહાગ્રાહ વિનષ્ટ પઙ્કઃ પ્રકાશ લક્ષ્મ્યાશ્રય નિર્મલાંકઃ શશાઙ્કઃ ભગવાન્ ચન્દ્રઃ રરાજ||

The Moon with its stain shone with graceful radiance like the shining water drops on the lotus leaf rid of its dew, or the one resplendent with the removal of moral impurities by the great planets.

શિલાતલં પ્રાપ્ય યથા મૃગેન્દ્રો મહારણં પ્રાપ્ય યથા ગજેન્દ્રઃ|
રાજ્યં સમાસાદ્ય યથા નરેન્દ્રઃ તથાપ્રકાશો વિરરાજ ચન્દ્રઃ||7||

સ|| શિલાતલં પ્રાપ્ય યથા મૃગેન્દ્રઃ મહારણં પ્રાપ્ય યથા ગજેન્દ્રઃ રાજ્યં સમાસાદ્ય યથા નરેણ્દ્રઃ તથા પ્રકાશઃ ચન્દ્રઃ રરાજ||

The Moon shone bright like the lion, the king of animals on the top of a rock. He shone like the lord of the elephants in the deep forest, and like the king who regained his kingdom.

પ્રકાશ ચન્દ્રોદય નષ્ઠદોષઃ પ્રવૃત્તરક્ષઃ પિસિતાશદોષઃ|
રામાભિરામેરિતિચિત્તદોષઃ સ્વર્ગ પ્રકાશો ભગવાન્ પ્રદોષઃ||8||
સ|| યદા ભગવાન્ પ્રદોષઃ સ્વર્ગપ્રકાશઃ તદા ચંદ્રોદય પ્રકાશાત્ (તિમિર) દોષઃ નષ્ટઃ પ્રવૃત્ત રક્ષઃ પિશિતાશદોષઃ રામાભિરામેરિતિ ચિત્ત દોષઃ (ભવતિ)||

As the Moon at dusk spread his brilliance, then the darkness was dispelled , dark deeds of cannibals disappear, and the love instincts of ladies lost in anger of love are incited.

તંત્રીસ્વનાઃ કર્ણસુખાઃ પ્રવૃત્તાઃ સ્વપયંતિ નાર્યઃ પતિભિઃ સુવૃત્તા|
નક્તાંચરા શ્ચાપિ તથા પ્રવૃત્તા નિહર્તુ મત્યદ્ભુતરૌદ્રવૃત્તાઃ||9||

 

સ|| તંત્રી સ્વનાઃ કર્ણસુખાઃ પ્રવૃત્તાઃ | સુવૃતાઃ નાર્યઃ પતિભિઃ સ્વપન્તિ| નક્તં ચરાઃ અત્યત્ભુત રૌદ્રવૃત્તાઃ અપિ વિહર્તું પ્રવૃત્તાઃ||

Sounds of instruments pleasing to the ears are being heard. Chaste ladies are sleeping with their husbands. The night creatures beagn to roam about exhibiting their arrogance.

મત્તપ્રમત્તાનિ સમાકુલાનિ રથાશ્વભદ્રાસન સંકુલાનિ|
વીરશ્રિયાચાપિ સમાકુલાનિ દદર્શ ધીમાન્ સ કપિઃ કુલાનિ||10||

સ|| ધીમાન્ વીરઃ હનુમાન્ સઃ શ્રિયા સમાકુલાનિ કુલાનિ મત્તપ્રમત્તાનિ ચ રથાશ્વભદ્રાસન સંકુલાનિ અપિ દદર્શ||

Intelligent Hanuman saw in those prosperous houses demons intoxicated with wealth. He also saw chariots with comfortable seats drawn by horses ( in those houses).

પરસ્પરં ચાધિક મક્ષિપન્તિ ભુજાંશ્ચ પીના નધિક્ષિપન્તિ|
મત્ત પ્રલાપા નધિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ દૃઢાનિ ચાપાનિ ચવિક્ષિપન્તિ||11||

સ|| (તે) પરસ્પરં અધિકં અક્ષિપન્તિ | પીનાન્ ભુજાન્ ચ અધિકં ક્ષિપન્તિ | મત્તપ્રલાપાન્ અધિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ | મત્તાનિ અન્યોન્યં અધિક્ષિપન્તિ ચ||

They ( the Rakshasas in those prosperous houses) were intoxicated. They were blabbering ridiculing each other, They were boisterously patting each others shoulders and even quarrelling with each other in the intoxication.

રક્ષાંસિ વક્ષાંસિ ચ વિક્ષિપંતિ ગાત્રાણી કાન્તાસુ ચ વિક્ષિપંતિ |
રૂપાણિ ચિત્રાણિ ચ વિક્ષિપંતિ ધૃઢાનિ ચાપાનિ ચ વિક્ષિપંતિ||12||

સ|| (તે) વક્ષાંસિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ કાન્તાસુ ગાત્રાણિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ ચ | રક્ષાંસિ દૃઢાનિ ચાપાનિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ | ચિત્રાણિ રૂપાણિ વિક્ષિપન્તિ ચ||

They are expanding their chests sportively touching their women. The Rakshasas drawing their strong bows were assuming wonderful forms.

દદર્શ કાન્તાશ્ચ સમાલભંત્યઃ તથાપરાઃ તત્ર પુનઃ સ્વપન્ત્યઃ|
સુરૂપવક્ત્રાશ્ચ તથા હસંત્યઃ ક્રુદ્ધાઃ પરાશ્ચાપિ વિનિશ્ર્વસંત્યઃ||13||

સ|| સમાલભંત્યઃ કાન્તાઃ ચ તત્ર અપરાઃ પુનઃ સ્વપન્ત્યઃ| તે સુરૂપ વક્ત્રાઃ ચ| તથા હસંત્યઃ ક્રુદ્ધાઃ ચ|| અપરાઃ વિનિઃ શ્વસંત્યઃ||

Among women who collected there some were sleeping, some have beautiful countenance,some are angry and some are laughing, some others are sighing.

મહાગજૈશ્ચાપિ તથા નદદ્ભિઃ સુપૂજિતૈશ્ચાપિ તથા સુસદ્ભિઃ|
રરાજ વીરૈશ્ચ વિનિશ્ર્વસદ્ભિઃ હ્રદોભુજઙ્ગૈ રિવ નિશ્ર્વસદ્ભિઃ||14||

 

સ|| તથા નદદ્ભિઃ સુપૂજિતૈઃ મહગજૈઃ ચ , હ્રદો નિઃશ્વ્રસદ્ભિઃ ભુજંગૈરિવ વિનિઃશ્ર્વસદ્ભિઃ વીરૈઃ ચ રરાજ||

There were huge respected elephants making sounds. There were warriors also sighing like snakes hissing in a lake.

બુદ્ધિ પ્રધાનાન્ રુચિરાભિદાનાન્ સંશ્રદ્ધધાનાન્ જગતઃ પ્રધાનાન્|
નાનાવિધાન્ રુચિરાભિદાનાન્ દદર્શ તસ્યાં પુરિયાતુધાનાન્||15||

સ|| તસ્યામ્ પુરીમ્ જગતઃ પ્રધાનાન્ બુદ્ધિપ્રધાનાન્ રુચિરાભિદાનાન્ સંશ્રદ્ધધાનાન્ નાના વિધાનાન્ રુચિરાભિધાનાન્ યાતુધાનાન્ દદર્શ||

In that city Hanuman saw intellectuals who were sweet in expression who had faith in religion, who were pre eminent ones in the world, heroes of different kinds, as well those who follow good practices.

નનન્દ દૃષ્ટ્વા સ ચ તાન્ સુરૂપાન્ નાનાગુણાનાત્મગુણાનુરૂપાન્ |
વિદ્યોતમાનાન્ સ તદાનુરૂપાન્ દદર્શ કાંશ્ચિચ્ચપુનર્વિરૂપાન્||16||

સ|| સઃ સુરૂપાન્ નાનાગુણાન્ આત્મગુણાનુરૂપાં વિદ્યોતમાનાન્ તાન્ દૃષ્ટ્વા સઃ નનન્દ | તદા કશ્ચિત્ વિરૂપાન્ અનુરૂપાન્ ચ દદર્શ ||

Seeing radiant handsome ones with many virtues, whose appearance reflected their virtues Hanuman was happy. He also saw ugly and thiose with similar forms too.

તતો વરાર્હાઃ સુવિશુદ્ધભાવાઃ તેષાં પ્રિયઃ તત્ર મહાનુભાવાઃ|
પ્રિયેષુ પાનેષુ ચ સક્તભાવા દદર્શ તારા ઇવ સુપ્રભાવાઃ||17||

સ|| તતઃ તત્ર વરાર્હાઃ વિશુદ્ધભાવાઃ મહાનુભાવાઃ પ્રિયેષુ પાનેષુ ચ દદર્શ| તેષાં તારા ઇવ સક્તભાવાઃ સુપ્રભાવાઃ સ્ત્રિયઃ દદર્શ||

He saw women adorned with choicest clothes, women whose minds are pure and attached to their lovers, and drinks . He also saw gentle ones among them shining brightly like the stars.

શ્રિયાજ્વલંતી સ્ત્રપયોપ ગુઢા યથા વિહઙ્ગાઃ કુશુમોપગૂઢાઃ|
દદર્શ કાશ્ચિત્પ્રમદોપગૂઢાઃ યથા વિહઙ્ગાઃ કુસુમોપગૂઢાઃ ||18||

સ||ઉપગૂઢાઃ શ્રિયા જ્વલંતીઃ ત્રપયા , તથૈવ નિશીથકાલે રમણોપગૂઢાઃ કાશ્ચિત્ કુસુમોપગૂઢાઃ પ્રમદોપગૂઢઃ વિહઙ્ગાઃ યથા (સ્ત્રિયઃ) દદર્શ||

Hanuman saw women embraced by their lovers being shy yet shining brightly. He also saw women adorned with flowers embraced by their beloveds being joyful like free birds.

અન્યાઃ પુનર્હત્મ્યતલોપવિષ્ટાસ્તત્ર પ્રિયાઙ્કેષુ સુખોપવિષ્ટાઃ |
ભર્તુઃ પ્રિયા ધર્મ પરા નિવિષ્ટા દદર્શ ધીમાન્મદનાભિ વિષ્ટાઃ||19||

સ|| ધીમાન્ ( હનુમાન્) હર્મ્યતલોપવિષ્ટાઃ પ્રિયાંગેષુ સુખોપવિષ્ટાઃ પ્રિયાઃ મદનાભિવિષ્ટાઃ અન્યાઃ ભર્તુઃ ધર્મપરાH નિવિષ્ટાઃ દદર્શ||
Intelligent Hanuman saw Rakshasa women on the terraces of the mansions sitting happily on the laps of their lovers overwhelmed with pleasure engaged in love. He saw others engaged in serving their husbands.

અપાવૃતાઃ કાઞ્ચનરાજિવર્ણાઃ કાશ્ચિત્પરાર્થ્યાઃ તપનીયવર્ણાઃ|
પુનશ્ચ કાશ્ચિચ્ચશલક્ષ્મવર્ણાઃ કાંત પ્રહીણા રુચિરાઙ્ગવર્ણાઃ||20||

સ|| અપાવૃતાઃ કાઞ્ચન રાજિવર્ણાઃ પરાર્થ્યાઃ તપનીયવર્ણાઃ પુનશ્ચ કાશ્ચિત્ કાન્તપ્રહીણાઃ શશલક્ષ્મવર્ણાઃ કાશ્ચિત્ રુચિરાંગ વર્ણાઃ (દદર્શ)||

He saw some of golden hue without veil, some altruistic shining with polished gold, some pale looking separated from their husbands , and a few of attractive complexion.

તતઃ પ્રિયાન્પ્રાપ્ય મનોભિરામાઃ સુપ્રીતિયુક્તાઃ પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય રામાઃ|
ગૃહેષુ હૃષ્ટાઃ પરમાભિરામાઃ હરિપ્રવીરઃ સ દદર્શ રામાઃ||21||

 

સ|| હરિપ્રવીરઃ તતઃ ગૃહેષુ પ્રિયાન્ પ્રાપ્ય મનોભિરામાઃ સુપ્રીતિયુક્તાઃ પ્રસમીક્ષ્યરામાઃ પરમાભિરામાઃ હૃષ્ટાઃ સઃ દદર્શ ||

In those houses that best among Vanaras, Hanuman saw some happy and delighted ones having obtained their husbands, also some ecstatic ones ecstatic on seeing the loved ones.

ચન્દ્રપ્રકાશશ્ચ હિ વક્ત્રમાલાઃ વક્રાક્ષિપક્ષ્માશ્ચ સુનેત્રમાલાઃ|
વિભૂષણાનાંચ દદર્શ માલાઃ શતહ્રદાનામિવ ચારુમાલાઃ||22||

સ|| ચંદ્રપ્રકાશાઃ વક્ત્રમાલાશ્છ વક્રાક્ષિપક્ષ્માશ્ચસુનેત્રમાલાઃ શતહ્રદાનામ્ ચારુમાલાઃ વિભૂષણાનામ્ માલાઃ ચ ||

He saw rows of faces radiating like Moon, rows of eyes with sidelong glances and graceful lashes, many wearing lovely ornaments resembling flashes of lightning.

નત્વેવ સીતાં પરમાભિજાતામ્ પથિસ્થિતે રાજકુલે પ્રજાતામ્|
લતાં પ્રપુલ્લામિવ સાધુજાતામ્ દદર્શ તન્વીં મનસાભિજાતામ્||23||

 

સ|| (પરંતુ) રાજકુલે પ્રજાતામ્ પરમાભિજાતામ્ સાધુ જાતાં પ્રફુલ્લાં લતાં ઇવ તન્વીં પથિ સ્થિતે સીતાં ન દદર્શ||

(But) He could not see Sita the one born in a noble royal family, a delicate one like creeper, following the right path.

સનાતને વર્ત્મનિ સન્નિવિષ્ટામ્ રામેક્ષણાં તાં મદનાભિવિષ્ટામ્|
ભર્તુર્મનઃ શ્રીમદનુપ્રવિષ્ટામ્ સ્ત્રીભ્યો વરાભ્યશ્ચ સદા વિશિષ્ટામ્||24||

સ|| સનાતને વર્ત્મનિ સન્નિવિષ્ટાં રામેક્ષણાં શ્રીમત્ ભર્તુઃ મનઃ મદનાભિવિષ્ટાં વરાભ્યઃ સ્ત્રીભ્યશ્ચ અનુપ્રવિષ્ટાં વિશિષ્ટાં તાં ન દદર્શ||

He did not see a lady with mind fixed in her husband, a lady of beautiful eyes, a lady abiding by the eternal good path compared to the wives present there.

ઉષ્ણાર્દિતાં સાનુસૃતાસ્રકંઠીં પુરા વરાર્હોત્તમ નિષ્કકંઠીમ્|
સુજાતપક્ષ્મામભિરક્તકંઠીમ્ વને પ્રવૃત્તામિવ નીલકંઠીમ્||25||

 

સ|| ઉષ્ણાર્દિતાં સાનુસૃતાસ્રકંઠીં પુરા વરાર્હોત્તમ નિષ્કકંઠીં સુજાત પક્ષ્માં અભિરક્ત કંઠીં વને અપ્રવૃત્તાં નીલકંઠીં ઇવ તન્વીં (તાં ન દદર્શ)

He did not see the lady shedding hot tears, whose throat is choked with incessant tears, whose neck was earlier wearing costly ornaments , who has beautiful eyelashes, who has sweet loving voice, who was earlier wandering in the forests.

અવ્યક્ત રેખામિવ ચંદ્ર રેખામ્ પાંસુપ્રદિગ્ધા મિવ હેમરેખામ્|
ક્ષતપ્રરૂઢા મિવ બાણરેખામ્ વાયુપ્રભિન્નામિવ મેઘ રેખામ્||26||

 

સ|| અવ્યક્ત રેખાં ચંદ્રરેખામિવ પાંસુપ્રદિગ્ધાં હેમ રેખાં ઇવ ક્ષતપ્રરૂઢાં બાણરેખામિવ વાયુપ્રભિન્નાં મેઘરેખામિવ (સ રામ પત્નીં ન દદર્શ)

She would be like an invisible ray like the rays of the moon, like a streak of gold invisible being covered with dust, like the scar of a superficially covered wound caused by an arrow, like a flake of cloud swept away bt the wind.

સીતામપશ્યન્ મનુજેશ્વરસ્ય રામસ્ય પત્નીં વદતાં વરસ્ય|
બભૂવ દુઃખાભિહતઃ શિરસ્ય પ્લવઙ્ગમો મંદ ઇવા ચિરસ્ય ||27||

સ|| વદતાં વરસ્ય મનુજેશ્વરસ્ય રામસ્ય પત્નીં અચિરસ્ય અપશ્યન્ પ્લવંગમઃ દુઃખાભિહિતઃ ચિરસ્ય મંદ ઇવ બભૂવ||

Not being able to see the wife of Lord Rama who is the best one among those who are good at speech, Hanuman hit by grief became slow for a while .

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાણ્ડે પંચમસ્સર્ગઃ ||

Thus ends the fifth sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana, the first ever poem of mankind composed by Maharshi Valmiki.
